Wellness hotels without the spa brochure. What a programme actually includes, how treatments are priced, whether the food and quiet hold up, and when a medical retreat is the wrong choice in 2026.
Spa, programme or clinic
A hotel with a pool and a massage list is not a wellness retreat. We separate a spa break from a structured programme with consultations, daily classes and a set menu, and from a medical clinic with qualified staff. Each has a different price and a different promise.
What the rate includes
Treatments are often extra. We add up the included sessions, the cost of a la carte therapies, the service charge and the meals that are not on the plan. A five-night package can look reasonable until three massages and a nutrition consultation are added at checkout.
Quiet, food and leaving better
The useful questions are unglamorous: is the room away from the gym, is the restaurant able to feed a normal appetite, and is there a doctor on call. We read recent reviews for noise and pressure to buy supplements, because a retreat that sells hard is not restful.
